Is is better to buy a 912 or a 911 porsche as a project to fix?

porsche

I know that the 912 is around 90 hp, which is slow. I want to make it faster without spending too much money. Too much money would be the cost of a 911 around 200 hp. Basically, is it more cost effective to buy a later 911 with better technology infrastructure and more horsepower or to beef up a 912?

well if you want power it always costs more (trust me). i made my ranger go from 150hp to 450hp and spent damn near 4000$ so cheapness really cant be a factor. like the saying goes you get what you pay for if you buy cheap parts they Just break more easily and you need to buy them again sooner. i would go with the 911 it has a higher base hp which means that after all the modifications you end up with more hps at the end the ordeal.

The 912 is basically a slow, cheap version of the 911.

If you plan to keep the car forever, get the 912.

If you plan to sell, get a 911 because a fixed up 911 would get you much more money than a nice 912.

The original 912s had a flat-four from a 356B, so there isn’t a ton of horsepower but it would get you where you wanted to go. Besides, a person doesn’t need a ton of horsepower unless you intend to race it on a track.
Any who, it really depends on what you plan on doing with the thing. Are you just going to stare at it in your garage after fixing it up or are you actually going to drive it?
As I have already said, it really depends on what you want. If you had to choose between an early 912 (not 1978) or a 1980s 911, I would get the 912 because they are much more rare and not necessarily cheaper to maintain and repair.

it just depends on what you plan to do. the 912 engine is basically a vw beetle flat 4. you could easily find a vast asst. of performance parts for it. and would most likely be cheaper parts. but the 911 has a better transmission that can handle to added power you will have to look into the other parts you may have to purchase. what will the car be used for. if its just going to be for fun i would say the 912 but if its going to be a track car i would say the 911 simply strong components.i would enjoy either car. I had a 911 and a 912 but they were both stock. so i cant give much insight about the performance sector. just look at simple things such as performance kits for each and decide what you can handle to do yourself.

get a 911, because it sounds like you want to do a half-assed job on the 912. when porsche designed it, they made it so it can handle 90 bhp, no more. if you want to add more power to it, you have to change the tires, the brakes, the suspension, springs, dampers, drive shaft, cam shaft, exhaust system, aero kit, and the sway bars.

the 911 should be fine, but old 911′s were pretty bad handlers. porsche put the engine at the back, not knowing that it was a bad idea. rather than moving it closer to the front, they spent 40 years engineering it, and they didn’t crack it until the 996. now it’s fantastic.

stay away from them, and get a 944 or a 928, although cheap ones are unreliable.

    good luck.

How pure Porsche do you want it to be?

If speed is your main criteria, and purity, go with a 912 and install an aluminum Buick V6
there are kits to hook it up to the Porsche transaxle.

If purity is also a concern, go with a 911

The real problem with what you are asking is the requirement “without spending too much money.” A 912 is a great car for what it is, but in terms of speed it is a momentum car. Due to the smaller lighter engine it’s better balanced than a 911, but it will always be lacking in power compared to the 911. And while there may be options to make small gains or engine swaps with other flat 4 engines, none of these will be inexpensive and none will get you that close to 200hp.

So what would you have to do to get a 912 into that range? In short, you would need to upgrade it to 911 parts: engine, suspension, and brakes (since the 912 suspension and brakes will not be up to the greater weight or power). A decent condition 912 will cost you at least $5k (probably more); an appropriate 911 engine that will get you into the power range you mention will be at least another $5k (probably more); suspension upgrades will be about $2-3k, and figure another $1k for brake upgrades. Another $1-2k for the parts needed to fit the engine into a 912… and then you are into the actual part of doing the work (and deciding if you may also want to spend the money to upgrade to a 915 transmission). Before labor or doing the work yourself you will have spent $14k, and most likely will be still facing some difficulties and likely additional costs to build a car that performs like a 911 but is worth much much less if you decide to sell it.

Or, you could take the $14k and look at a 911SC or maybe even find a 3.2L Carrera that does all of that, and will have the resale value of a 911.

And while swaps like the mentioned Buick V6 may look tempting from a price point, you have to consider that there is a good deal of performance loss outside of power when making a switch like this (the V layouts will move the center of weight on the car a couple inches higher than the boxer layout, and will result in extremely poor handling… ultimately making the cars ability to perform around a course more in line with a stock 912, if that good).

The 912 only makes sense if you are planning a project where you will do all of the above changes regardless of what you get (ie, planning a track car that will use a 3.5L engine built from a 930 block, etc). Unless you are especially enamored with having such a project, your money would be much better spent on the 911.

You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here – carquotes.imess.net

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
