Why does a Carrera GT has such a raspy exhaust note? I want to know what gives the engine this sound. I know it is not because it “revs high,” a BMW M5 doesn’t sound like this. It’s not because of the mufflers because it’s still raspy with straight pipes.
Maybe a better car to compare to is a Lamboghini Gallardo. Both relatively small, high reving, dual over cam engines, with similar placement.
Why would these two engines, both with straight pipes have dramatically different exhaust notes? For comparison listen to the AWE Carrera GT w/straight pipes and Fabspeed’s Gallardo w/straight pipes. One sounds like a race car the other sounds like a car without a muffler.
I am looking for specific engine design(s) that gives the CGT it’s sound. Maybe it’s the shape of the exhaust ports in the heads, that kind of thing.

It’s mostly because the Porsche’s Boxster engine is a totally different design compared to BMW, and it does sound different. But the engine in a Porsche is rear mounted, vs the BMW which is front mounted, and being front mounted the exhaust is longer and it causes it to sound totally different. The longer the exhaust the more time it has to cool down and quiet down.
Paul is absolutely right, you cannot compare a BMW engine to a Porsche engine, completely different setup, completely different cars
Some interesting comments so far… first of all, the V10 in a Carrera GT has little to nothing in common with the engine in a Boxster! Not even sure why that was mentioned, unless just the common confusion the the boxer layout used most often in Porsches sounds like Boxster… but again , in this case, we’re talking about a V10, not a flat 10.
As for the sound difference… ultimatley it’s because they are different engines. Different air intake with different internals and different design, all feeding into a different exhaust system. The V10 in the Carrera GT was derived from a racing engine, and it is substantially different for anything that would’ve been designed directly for street use. Further, being a sports car as opposed to a luxury car, there was likely less concern on behalf of the designers to worry about possible volume issues as there would’ve been with the M5… and so on. Both V10s, but quite different other than the common layout.
Porsche is known for making some of the best engine sounds.
They use a barely legal Racing exhaust system like the ones developed for F1 cars.
It has small cylinders. If you notice the CGT has a 5.7 liter V10. Now a Dodge Viper also has a V10 but is 8+ liters depending on year, the Dodge Viper has a very deep tone because it has a huge engine with huge cylinders. The Chevrolet Corvette’s 5.7 liter LS1 is a V8 which displaces as much as a CGT.
8/10=.8 so the Viper displaces .8 liters per cylinder
5.7/10=.57 so the CGT displaces .57
5.7/8=.71 so the Corvette displaces .71
Now if we bring in a raspier engine, a Honda Civic engine
1.6/4=.4
As you can see the CGT’s cylinders are closer to the size of a Honda’s which coincidentally have a similar exhaust note, at least compared to some other high performance cars.
You cant compare a bmw to a porsche. completely different cars and set up. I think when they were refering to the Boxster they were refering to the boxer engine set up that porsche is known to use in the cayman, 911, carrera, and boxster. I would say it makes that raspy sound because the exhaust isnt as long and doesnt have enough time to cool down giving it that “raw raspy” sound. All their high performance parts on the carrera gt cound most definately play a role. Dont get mad at my arrogance on foreign cars(if i made a mistake on something)!!! im learning!!!
You can’t compare different engines, theyre different brand, if it’s really that bad, bring it to the dealer.
Very nice site! is it yours too

i didnt know that, is there another article like that? because i really wanna know more about it
Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
