You may remember me, I had a 74 Porsche motor put my 72 VW Bus. Now, this motor was a 2.0 that was built up to a 2.8. While driving to work, on Jan. 1st ’09 I ran outa gas, on the off ramp. Luckily I had a gas can with a couple of gallons in it, so I ran around, got the can, poured most of it into my tank… like a chinese fire drill, I ran back up and jumped in the drivers seat (traffic light was still red), tried to start my engine, but the gas wasn’t there yet, ya know? and my battery was losing power, so I turned the key to on, which starts my electric fuel pump, and let my bus coast backward down the off ramp and attempted to kick start the motor. No go either, but now gas is getting to the carb. so I pump it, pray a little, turn the key and she starts up, but she sounds really rough and loud, I got less than a quarter mile to go, most of it down hill, so I go for it, my ole bus is backfiring and then starts to make a terrible knocking sound… have I killed her? Is it a bent valve? broken piston? Is it fixable? and at what cost for parts, do ya think? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks again.
The gas from my gas can was only about a week old. It is an old vehicle and my gas gauge does NOT work, so I keep a gas can with gas in it, because I do run out, from time to time. LOL
what is “spark-knock”? and could trying to start it rolling backwards have any connection?

Could be the grade of gasoline you put in it. or the gas could have been old and caused the engine to “spark-knock”
It is most likely the gas that you put in it. I have a friend had the same problem. He owns a ’91 nissan 300zx and he filled up his gas a started having the same problem.
He asked me what the problem was, because it started happening right after he filled it up. we thought that there was water in the gas and so added a little bit of antifreeze to the gas tank to evaporate the water, and it fixed the problem.
Ofcourse, if the noise is really loud it could be caused by some problem relating to the engine! The car is really old you know!!! the best thing is to take it to a mechanic, or someone who has worked on cars extensively!!!
Its the gas. Sometimes depending on compression ratios, timing, etc. A motor like that requires 91 Octane, not 87. Also you may want to adjust your valves, check your timing etc. because it may have been knocked out of whack when you ran it dry.
Put some fresh gas in it and start it up. You are prolly pumping some air through the fuel lines if you ran out and only put a gallon in it out of the gas can.
“Spark knock” is an old time term for “pre-ignition” or also “detonation”. It occurs when your fuel mix is low octane and tries and succeeds to self ignite due to compression and or some ignition source like a piece of glowing carbon stuck to a cylinder, or valve that’s running way to hot.
The result of such ignition is to fire the fuel charge before the piston can “get over the top” of the ignition stroke. This makes it all want to run backward- which it cannot as the flywheel and other parts are all moving against it. The results can be harmful to the point of bending a rod, or may just rock the piston violently making the knocking sound- which usually goes away if nothing is broken.
There is also the water possibility- check your gas can for water in the bottom. It is possible to put enough water into a fuel system to bend stuff as water does not compress. The engine will usually quit before this happens, but you did force it to turn over by jumping start it in reverse.(Very hard on the transmission as reverse is the weakest gear in a transmission.)
So- next time the engine is out of the van- pull the gas tank and put in a sending unit.
I would locate the knock by pulling spark plug wires one at a time till the knock goes away. That will be your bent rod. Check with a compression tester. When you get to a bent rod the noise will come back.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
