try the other gears. if it won,t move forward in any gears, you will need another transmission, probably a band broke.

I hate to tell you this but your transmission Forward Clutch simply picked that moment to give up the ghost, it is normal wear, the only solution is a transmission rebuild or "overhaul". I have been doing tranny's like forever and the symptoms are very clear.

As to weather the cost / value equation comes out on the side of making this degree of investment in a 20 year old Porsche is not for me to decide - the overall condition plus intangible factors of value to you as the owner may add up to being worth the investment.

On any major repair I recommend that you get 3 or 4 estimates from local service facilities unless you are lucky enough to have a shop with an absolutely stellar reputation available. Compare the estimates and choose one of the middle estimates. My reasoning for this is the low estimate either left something out or worse is deliberately giving a low ball estimate to get you in and then when your car is all torn apart they find all sorts of critically important things wrong with it which run your bill through the roof. Do the leg work and be an informed car owner. No reliable technician or shop will give an estimate for repair site unseen except as a budgetary estimate which will be a range from the middle average to the unusual high end possible but because you can not drive around to multiple shops in this situation you are going to have to base your decision on this less than perfect estimation scenario.

Chances are being a automatic that the torque converter is out. The downside to that is that the transmission will have to be pulled to fix it and it is so much trouble to pull the transmission that most shops will recommend a rebuild before reinstalling. I am not familiar with a Porshe but on most models you are looking at around $1000 to have a transmission pulled rebuilt and put back in. If the car is in decent shape it is defiantly worth fixing.

that happened to me on a Plymouth Fury in 1993, I never did figure out what it was. Of course then, I didn't really work on cars yet. Just strange to hear it happen to someone else.

well, you will have to take this to the transmission shop, it sounds like either the cable for the shifter is stretched too far from abuse or use, or the switch for the gear selector is broken in the transmission ( on a automatic ) on a manual transmission it would be caused from the clutch being worn out or the pressure plate on the clutch has bad springs, if it is the automatic transmission it can also be the throttle valve cable on the transmission being out of adjustment from you mashing on the gas to hard

No worries.. Just turn the drivers seat around, the car looks kind of the same front to back I'll bet people will hardly notice.
Sorry for your troubles.

Sorry, I can't see it from here to figure out what broke when you "pushed the gas a little too hard."

You'll have to have your mechanic take a look and then he will be able to give you an estimate of cost of repairs, and whether or not it's worth fixing.

Theory. They abound. The reverse band is working, but the pumps to go forward have failed. Or any of a number of other transmission problems.

You broke an axle (although then it shouldn't back up either).
