There is no outside trunk release. On some of the older cars (late 90′s) you used to be able to pull the cable by hand and pop it open, but not anymore becuase they are electronic and not cable-actuated. You’re out of luck my friend. Break a window, have it towed, get a new key cut, or call a lockout service.

The guys below are mistaken, there is no cable in the wheel well to release the trunk. I hope you didn’t spend an hour jacking the car up, taking off the wheel and rooting around for it. It doesn’t exist. Breaking a window might cost a couple hundred (unless your insurance has glass coverage), but so would having it towed or calling a lockout service. A broken window won’t prevent the car from starting.

The Pelican Parts photos are of an older Boxster. It’s not the same on an 06 911.

I love the thumbs down from people who don’t know what they are talking about…

Hey Designer, your car does have a interior motion sensor, but if you do break a window, it will set the alarm off, but the car won;t go into a lockdown mode. You’d just have to shut the alarm off with the key or remote once you got it out of the trunk. Enjoy that Turbo S. We just sold a tweaked up 2005 with about 650 HP. Nasty, nasty ,nasty….

You should have a second key, but if you don’t you’ll at least need the code from your ownership materials to get a key cut — and about two weeks because they have to send that to Germany for a key (in theory).

Break a window? That would be many hundreds if not thousands of dollars to fix, and I’m pretty sure the car would refuse to start after you broke the glass — they go into lock down mode (Porsche used to call it the Porsche Block System).

I think a lockout service is the only way to go, and I’m not sure how the car is going to like that either.

The “Emergency Trunk Release” is … in the trunk, to let kids locked in there get out. The only manual emergency release on the cars is for the fuel filler flap; it’s a little ring you pull, located inside the passenger door frame — in case the central locking system opens the door, but not the filler flap.

    ADDED:
I stand corrected — possibly; this is not in my Owners Manual, which I’ve read cover to cover. Despite the fact that the release is electrical, there does appear to be an emergency cable release, at least on a 2007 ( – 2 photos). You can get to it after you dismantle the front end of your car. A note of caution: don’t work under your car with just the emergency jack holding it up, or even a floor jack. Get some jack stands and keep them in the back seat of your car, along with your tools and a jack, to always be prepared for this problem. REMEMBER to remove all of this equipment BEFORE locking your car with the keys in the trunk.

I’m with the Sales Manager on this (including not appreciating the thumbs down): even if there is a cable to pull, it’s obviously meant to be an in-shop procedure. Look at the photos (my link actually works), which sort-of claim to be applicable to a 2007 Carrera 4S; you’re going to do this to your car on the side of the road?

My car has an interior infrared motion detection system. I believe that if I broke a window and reached inside to unlock the car that system would not only set off the alarm, but lock down the car. However, you can lock the car and leave the infrared off by hitting the key fob button twice in rapid succession.

Besides remembering to remove the equipment you need to get to the “emergency cable trunk release,” REMEMBER to always disable the infrared system in your car in case you need to break a window after you’ve locked your car with the keys in the trunk.

If you peel back the lower plastic liner at the front of the front left wheel well, you should find a small cable extending from what would be next to the trunk – this is the release.

On the earlier 996 models (and early Boxsters too) you could access this by popping out the front left headlight, though I do not think that still works on the 997 models.

I would use the electrical jumper on the fuse box. All you need is a battery charger. In the Drivers (Lt side) foot-well, in the fuse box, there is a jumper bar that you pull out and attach the positive lead of the battery charger or a spare 12v battery. Then momentarily contact the ground to the door latch. That should pop the trunk lid.

As others have noted, it should be under the left front wheel well (plastic) liner. Jack up the car, remove the LF wheel, remove the plastic liner and viola.

There are some super-clear photos of this (the cable release is not obvious) at (copy and paste into your web browser). Scroll to the bottom of the page for 3 photos of increasing detail.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
