Porsche 911 Turbo S 911 Goes Off The Dial
By Andy Enright
There are lots of options open to the customer who wants a fast 911. Porsche has been nice enough not to make any slow ones, which is handy, but what it does have is a wide range of 911s offering different temperatures of searing pace. Between the sizzling standard Carerra and the roasting race-bred GT3 RS, there are models to suit most tastes, budgets and levels of insanity. If you want the hottest 911, however, the Turbo S has its own personalised parking bay on the surface of the sun.
Porsche has sold 911 Turbo S models in the UK before but they were short-lived run-out derivatives designed to prolong interest in the 993 and 996 generation cars before their replacements arrived. Today’s 997 car gets its Turbo S version while there’s still plenty of life left in it.
Whether you see this as the ultimate 911 will depend on your point of view. The GT3 and GT3 RS might offer the purer driving experiences with their normally-aspirated engines and the turbocharged GT2 may well have the edge in terms of outright lunacy but these track-focused products will be demanding companions to live with on a daily basis. The 911 Turbo remains the high performance benchmark for buyers confident they can do without a fire extinguisher and a roll cage and don’t want their spine compacted by race-tuned suspension. The Turbo S is a progression from the iconic Turbo and, for the time being, the most powerful turbocharged Porsche 911 ever.
Any car topping the Porsche 911 range is going to be devastatingly fast and the Turbo S is certainly that. The same twin-turbocharged, six-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine found in the Turbo is employed but for the Turbo S, it develops an extra 30bhp. That gives a grand total of 530bhp ably assisted by 700Nm of torque. The result is a 0-62mph sprint that’s 0.3s faster than the standard Turbo at 3.3s and a 196mph top speed.
\”Porsche has thrown the options list at its 911 Turbo flagship, then chucked in an extra 30bhp for luck\”
Otherwise, the mechanicals are much as you’ll find in the Turbo with some of the more desirable extras from that car’s options list thrown in as standard. All that power is transferred to the road surface by an all-wheel-drive transmission system governed by PTM Porsche Traction Management technology. PSM Porsche Stability Management is also on hand to step in and save the day should things get a little too hairy. Fans of automotive acronyms can also get their teeth into PTV Porsche Torque Vectoring which helps to sharpen the car’s response to steering inputs and includes a limited slip differential between the rear wheels. Dynamic Engine Mounts work to stiffen the chassis when cornering and the Sport Chrono Package Turbo incorporates a launch control function that’s activated via buttons on the steering wheel.
]]>
Porsche is rightly proud of the evolutionary styling development of the 911 but the policy doesn’t generate the buzz around each model that some more extrovertly-styled rivals enjoy. With Porsche, the focus is on the technology and the driving experience and that’s the way the company likes it but it sometimes seems as though our ancestors progressed from hitting woolly mammoths with clubs to inventing the microwave oven quicker than 911s change headlights. The classic lines of the car still hold water today and the Turbo S model emphasises its potency with an all-round more aggressive look than the standard cars – just not too aggressive.
The 911 interior is as classy as its exterior lines would suggest. Expensively slush-moulded fascia materials made a welcome change to the hard plastics seen in the 996. Two-tone leather sports seats come as standard with the Turbo S featuring adaptive technology that holds you in place when cornering hard. The PCM Porsche Communication Management system dominates the facia with its 6.5\” colour screen display. It bundles satellite navigation, together with the various settings menus together with the audio system and even an optional TV tuner.
The Turbo S is available exclusively with the PDK gearbox, a conventional seven speed manual gearbox with a hydraulic control mechanism which is divided into two separate units. There’s one clutch looking after the even gears and one taking care of the odd ones. It means that the clutches can work in unison, producing super fast shifting. Each gearchange is around 60 per cent more rapid that that of a conventional automatic transmission.
Coupe and Cabriolet versions are available, each with an extremely generous equipment list and prices around £21,000 over the equivalent Turbo model. Turbo S buyers get Dynamic Cornering Lights, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, 19\” RS Spyder alloy wheels, cruise control and a CD/DVD changer on top of the standard features on the Turbo model. The Porsche Vehicle Tracking System is also included in the price, as is driver training at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.
Thanks in part to its efficient direct injection engine technology, the Turbo S isn’t the ecological disaster you might expect. Its 24.8mpg combined economy is identical to that of the normal Turbo and better than the vast majority of cars with this kind of performance. Of course, if you use that performance on a regular basis, the fuel consumption figures will make far grimmer reading.
Porsche has thrown the options list at its 911 Turbo flagship, then chucked in an extra 30bhp for luck. The resulting 911 Turbo S sets a new benchmark for power and performance within the 911 dynasty. The package comes at quite a premium but the Turbo S is loaded with advanced technology and has the ability to out-pace supercars with far larger pricetags.

Porsche 914 Modifications, Suggestions and Alternatives
The Porsche 914 is an extremely adaptable sports car. Introduced in 1969 the model was produced till 1976. The mid engine two seater is a little automobile and really nimble. The only down side with the 914 is that it was slightly underpowered. I think this was performed to keep the 914 from cutting into the market share of the Porsche 911.
The engines available in the stock 914 during the run had been the 1.7L (flat-4), 1.8L (flat-4), 2.0L (flat-4), and 2.0L (flat-6). This is where the modification of the Porsche 914 begins. It is typical to rebuild one of the original stock engines and with the vast availability of Porsche aftermarket components and OEM parts you can make a extremely snappy 914 with acceptable horsepower increases. The enjoyment is in the installation of a much more productive Porsche 911 engine. The most well-liked engine change is the 2.7L, next on the list in recognition is the 3.0L, both generate superb horsepower and are very dependable. The king of the hill however is without a doubt the 3.6L which will give a Porsche 914 sufficient horsepower to drive just about anything off of the asphalt. When changing out the stock engine with one of the far more powerful Porsche 911 flat-6 engines it is necessary to install stiffening kits into the 914 simply because of the increase in torque and horsepower these engines deliver.
The next natural step in the modification of the Porsche 914 is the suspension. The stock 914 utilised a 4 lug bolt pattern for the wheels which doesn’t leave much room for change. The stock suspension ought to be upgraded to the 911 in the front for the 5 lug bolt pattern which is much more responsive and can be upgraded easier and carry bigger wheels and tires. Also the rear of the car needs to have 914-6 hubs installed and the trailing arms reinforced, this will also permit the use of 5 bolt pattern wheels. Changing to the 5 bolt pattern also allows you the choice of utilizing any of the Porsche fuchs wheels of the appropriate size.
Finally, the last of the Porsche 914 modifications is the body. With out taking away the original look of the 914 there are a selection of Porsche body kit available from fender kits in steel to fiber glass to Porsche 916 look alike kits. The ultimate Porsche body kit for the 914 is the 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS Coupe. Modifying the body of the Porsche 914 will totally change the dynamics of the vehicle. Everything from aerodynamics, to overall weight will produce a distinct feel in the car which is to be expected.
When thinking about Porsche Tuning, it is a personal thing. I have attempted in this short space to give you a image of just what can be carried out with the versatility of the Porsche 914. Mechanical adjustments to effect overall performance, suspension adjustments to improve stability and driveability and body modification to personalize the exterior of the vehicle. As for the interior that is where I cease. There is just to much that can be completed to make the interior space of the 914 a reflection of the owner.

Darien Porsche 911 Turbo S available to select buyers
As a Porsche owner, I’m often asked by friends and family why in the world I would spend so much on a car from my local Darien Porsche dealership. I try to explain to them my love of the vehicle and they just don’t understand it. But if I’m being honest, it’s okay that they don’t understand because their opinion doesn’t change my feelings. Unless you love Porsche, you’ll never understand it, and until you own a Porsche you can’t judge us for spending the money because you don’t know what it feels like to get behind that wheel.
If my family and friends think I’m crazy for spending around ,000 for a Darien Porsche 911, then I can’t imagine what they will say when they hear what people are spending on the latest vehicle from the brand, the Porsche 918 Spyder.
At the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, Porsche surprised everyone by revealing the all-new Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid. Since there was such a positive response to the vehicle, the brand confirmed last summer that it would put the hybrid into production and we finally have a number to put next to the hybrid – 5,000. You read right, that’s 5,000! Production will begin on September 18, 2013 (09/18/13) and will be limited to only 918 models. Orders are being taken now at the local Darien Porsche dealership, but I think it’s safe to say I won’t be trying to buy this one!
The Porsche 918 Spyder will be powered by a 3.4-liter V8 engine. The engine will produce 500 horsepower and will be supplemented by three electric motors which deliver an additional 218 horsepower. The Spyder’s transmission will be a 7-speed gearbox coupled to Porsche’s own double clutch system delivering power to the rear axle. The hybrid will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and will reach a top speed of 199 miles per hour. The vehicle even recorded a Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes and 30 seconds, beating the legendary Carrera GT by two seconds!
Porsche recently announced that 918 buyers will get additional perks. As an added bonus, buyers are allowed to purchase the 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder.” Available only to buyers of the 918, it too will be limited to no more than 918 units. The special edition will be available as a coupe or convertible and boasts “acid green” accents on the badging, mirrors, seats, dash, and instrumentation, as well as matching brake calipers. Other special accents include a plaque on the glove compartment which bears the production number of your 918 Spyder, a full leather interior, and carbon-fiber elements.
I’m very excited about the upcoming Porsche 918 Spyder as well as the Porsche 911 S “Edition 918 Spyder” and will keep you up to date on all the details as they continue to emerge. As for my family and friends, I know they don’t understand my love and that’s alright with me. When I get behind the wheel of my Darien Porsche 911 and feel the thrill of the ride, none of that matters!

Porsche Chayenne: Improved Engineering
With every new automobile, Porsche tried to redefine the meaning of performance, by creating a more powerful engine. Cayenne Turbo makes no exception to this rule. Like all Porsche engine, it is hand assembled and the twin turbo V8 rises to an exacting level of technical excellence.
Motronic ME7.1.1.is a system that controls the split-second precision of the Cayenne V8 and V6 super engine. This new highly intelligent engine management system balances impressive power with great smoothness. All this to prove that Cayenne`s “brain” matches its brawn. The Motronic system is built to monitor a wide range of sensors and engine components. It compares streams of data with corresponding sets of reference values, all this in a speed of milliseconds. Then, if it finds any differences, the system adjusts key engine functions, such as the ignition of fuel injection, based on this comparison. Into Motronic management are included other key systems, such as onboard diagnostics and cylinder-specific knock control, with automatic adaptation to any change in fuel quality. All this for optimal performance in all driving conditions.
]]>
This process is seamless and automatic so the engine has a great level of power and torque. Also, another great result is better fuel economy and lower emissions in the exhaust stream.
Another function of the Motronic system is the managing of air flowing into the engine to ensure maximum levels of performance. It does that by regulating boost pressure on the Cayenne Turbo.
The Cayenne model includes another system, the resonance induction system with a variable-length intake manifold. This is also an inventive engineering concept that uses pressure waves created by the inlet valves. It does this to increase the density of the incoming air, which, in the end, will increase the amount of energy released during combustion. There are two intake tubes, and depending on the speed, the system will select one of them. The longer tube is used at lower speeds in order to maximize low-end torque. At around 4250 rpm, it switches to shorter Intake tube so that it maximizes power output with a more eager throttle response.
The Porsche Cayenne engineers wanted to improve combustion for more power, better fuel economy, reduced emissions and less maintenance. To do so, they created a static high-voltage ignition system with separate ignition coils on each individual spark plug. This is an advanced method that allows a longer spark-plug life. The sequential fuel injection system is equally advanced. A returnless fuel supply system serves each injector in order to continuously adjust the precise air/fuel mix. The result is of course a better environment, because it controls the emissions.

The Porsche 2008 Cayenne Line-up
Porsche has released a refined Cayenne line-up for 2008. These include the base, S, and the Turbo. Two of the considered significant changes include the angrier looking, more slated VW headlights and a revised front fascia with ribs cutting across larger vents.
The turbo model keeps its signature hood bulges. It will also be differentiated from the other two models by larger turn indicators that resemble the LED strips found on the front of the new 911 Turbo. Base and S models on the other hand, will have smaller, round indicators. It was recently announced that a refined Boxster with increases of five horsepower for each model will go along with the vehicle. With this, some automotive journalists think Porsche will give a similar increase to the Cayenne.
All three Cayennes, the base, S, and the Turbo, have the trade mark of larger gill-like front fascias. They also all have new engines and suspension options. The new line of V-6 and V-8 engines all feature direct fuel injection, as Porsche calls it the DFI, for greater power and efficiency. As an option, all three models will also have a new electronic suspension system called Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC).
]]>
Despite of its impressive performance and record-setting sales, some critics have (and are still) complaining that the first-generation Porsche Cayenne lack in character, and that misfortune continues with the 2008 Cayenne. It has a new face, mildly reworked interiors, and revised engines, but little else feels or looks different.
On a brighter side, the Cayenne S and Turbo are even more muscle-bound than before, with power increasing from 340 and 450 hp to 385 and 500 hp, respectively. Porsche says that highway fuel economy is up 15 percent for the Cayenne S and 11 percent for the Turbo – thanks to the new and improved direct injection or the DFI. The base Cayenne was supplied by VW with V-6 power manual-transmission which has been enlarged from 3.2 to 3.6 liters for an additional 43 hp and 44 lb-ft of torque. Active anti roll bars are now available on air-suspended models.
Coming standard on all Cayenne models is Porsche’s Stability Management (PSM), with its brake assist function, advanced trailer stabilization system and off-road ABS. These functions improve the brakes’ reaction speed, significantly reduce the yawing which can affect vehicles when towing, and optimize braking performance on loose ground. The static and, for the first time, dynamic bend lighting that come with the bi-xenon headlamps fitted as standard to the Cayenne Turbo likewise increase active safety. The system, which can also be ordered for the Cayenne and Cayenne S, is activated as soon a speed of three kilometers per hour is reached.
